Abstract. The topic of whether and how ophthalmic drugs can be used during pregnancy is important. However, limited information on the subject exists in the literature. Topically applied ocular medications cause systemic side effects that are of concern to patients and a challenge to ophthalmologists. Certain antibiotics, as well as corticosteroids, have been shown to cause teratogenicity in animal studies. In addition, antiglaucoma medications pose a potential risk to the fetus if absorbed systemically. This article reviews the relationship between major groups of ophthalmic drugs and their possible adverse effects on the mother and fetus, as well as recommendations for the treatment of pregnant patients with eye diseases in order to reduce possible risks.

Key words: eye medications, pregnancy, teratogenicity
