Abstract. The aim of the study is to analyze the possibilities of implementing in routine practice a system for measuring health and meaningful outcomes for patients with OA after knee or hip joint replacement in order to reward improved outcomes. The scope of the model includes all patients undergoing operative therapy: osteotomy, joint replacement, or other forms of surgical treatment. The model covers three main stages: 1) assessment of patients‘ risk profile before surgical treatment; 2) evaluation of the results of knee and hip replacement during the hospital stay and 30 days after discharge – mortality, rehospitalization, reoperation, complications; 3) assessment of medium-term health outcomes for a period of 2 years after discharge – functional status, pain, quality of life, work ability, patient satisfaction with the health outcome, continued treatment and long-term health care. In a well-functioning health system, creating benefits for patients through improved health outcomes should determine the reward for all participants in the system.
Key words: value-based healthcare, health outcomes measurement, joint replacement, surgery
