Gocho Moskov (1891-1942) – the pioneer of rectal surgery in Bulgaria

Abstract. Gocho Simeonov Moskov (1891-1942) is one of the doyens of Bulgarian academic surgery. He studied medicine in France and Italy. From 1921 to 1942, he worked in the surgical propaedeutic clinic of Aleksandrovska Hospital (now the First Surgery). He specialized in Paris in 1924. He was scientific secretary and editor of the Bulletin of the Bulgarian Surgical Society (now Surgery journal) from 1934 to 1938. He is the author of two textbooks on surgery and 31 scientific papers, some of them in French. The most interesting publications are in the field of abdominal surgery and more specifically rectal cancer surgery. Gocho Moskov’s clinical and scientific interests extend to other areas – blood transfusion, anesthesiology, tendon surgery and cardiovascular surgery. He is remembered by his students and colleagues as devoted surgeon and kind to his patients. He died in 1942 from colon cancer.
