Influence of some sociodemographic factors on anxiety level in patients with breast cancer

Abstract. Introduction: Anxiety in breast cancer patients has a negative impact on prognosis, treatment adherence, survival, and quality of life. The level of anxiety is influenced by multiple sociodemographic factors. Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the correlation between some social and demographic factors and the level of anxiety in patients with breast cancer. Materials and Methods: 210 patients with breast cancer were included. Some demographic indicators and Taylor’s anxiety level questionnaire were used. Statistical processing of the results was performed using Excel and SPSS v26 programs. Results and Discussion: The leading position of the average with a tendency towards a low level of anxiety in women was found. A statistically significant relationship is observed between anxiety and sleep problems (χ² = 28.694, df = 3, p < 0.001, Cramér’s V = 0.370), as well as with the change in attitude towards the world and others (χ² = 18.769, df = 3, p < 0.001, Cramér’s V = 0.299). The variables age, place of residence, work commitment, concomitant diseases do not show a statistically significant relationship with the level of anxiety. Conclusion: It is necessary to consider the influence of sociodemographic factors on the level of anxiety and identify high-risk patients for the manifestation of psychopathological disorders. This personalized strategy will help medical professionals implement individualized therapy aimed at preventing and alleviating anxiety.
