Abstract. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is diabetes fi rst recognized during pregnancy and it is increasingly diagnosed. It is associated with a number of maternal complications during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as fetal morbidity. Adverse maternal and fetal outcomes are observed in both the short and long term. Midwives play an important role in the care of women before and during pregnancy and childbirth, and in the postpartum period, and can be an important factor in the prevention and management of GDM. The factors that lead to successful management of GDM are lifestyle optimization, self-monitoring of blood sugar, intensive patient education and inclusion of medication when necessary.
