Abstract. In Bulgaria, a structured program for the secondary prevention of cervical cancer has not yet been implemented, which necessitates the reliance on opportunistic screening. The application of colposcopy – a non-invasive diagnostic method – significantly reduces the time required for the diagnosis and treatment of precancerous and cancerous cervical lesions. Historically, colposcopy has been used as a diagnostic procedure performed exclusively by specialized physicians. However, the rapid development of medical technologies has created opportunities for midwives to actively support and collaborate with physicians in this process. The objective of this review is to present the contemporary role of the midwife in conducting colposcopic examinations as a part of secondary cervical cancer prevention. The focus is placed on effective international programs that highlight the midwife’s involvement in preventive healthcare activities.
