Abstract. The COVID-19 pandemic has put pressure on emergency departments and emergency medics to accommodate the ever-increasing flow of infected patients while continuing with the diagnosis and treatment of all other socially significant emergencies. This challenge has determined the need for organizational changes, identification of risk factors for infectious disease progression, and prompt and correct decisions on diagnostic and therapeutic management of infected patients. Leaving the COVID-19 pandemic, through this article we summarize the known risk factors. We present their analysis through the eyes of the emergency physician and their importance for general medical practice.

Key words: risk factors, COVID-19, emergency department, general medical practice
