Abstract. Diabetes mellitus, with its increasing prevalence and severe micro- and macrovascular complications, represents a socially significant disease requiring timely diagnosis and individualized therapeutic control. In this article, we present a retrospective, observational study among a Bulgarian population of hospitalized patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, revealing some of the most common biochemical abnormalities with an emphasis on age and type of diabetes mellitus as a factor for their manifestation. In Bulgaria, there are no established comprehensive modern studies aimed at evaluating and adapting diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms concerning various endocrine diseases in the geriatric patient group. Targeted evaluation of a number of biochemical markers would improve the diagnostic process, shorten the time to necessary therapy initiation, and reduce medical costs in daily medical practice.
