Bronchial asthma and hypermobilie syndrome in childhood – clinical and laboratory characteristic

Abstract. The purpose of the presented study is to examine the association between two frequent pathological conditions in pediatrics – bronchial asthma and hypermobility syndrome, possible correlation of the two conditions, clinical characteristics of childhood asthma in relation to family history, personal atopy, therapy and hypermobile syndrome. The study included 70 children: 50 of them with bronchial asthma and hypermobile syndrome, control groups of healthy children and children with hypermobile syndrome without childhood asthma. Laboratory clinical methods were used, quantification of Tenascin X as a molecule from the extracellular matrix, pulmonary function tests, echocardiography (EchoCG) and statistical analysis of the obtained results were carried out. From the analysis of the results, several important conclusions for clinical practice are necessary: hypermobile syndromes have a number of clinical manifestations: musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, ocular, pulmonary and cardiac. Children with asthma and hypermobile syndrome have a pronounced family burden and personal atopy and good control of the disease with inhaled corticosteroids, a higher ECP is found in them. The indicators from the spirometry (PFT) ‒ FEV 1 and MFEV 25-75 show a related dynamic change. Tenascin X shows an inverse correlation with PFT indicators. Abnormalities in the Echocardiographic finding, mainly according to the type of mitral valve prolapse, were found in a significant proportion of the children examined. The study of Tenascin X levels is the first of its kind in Bulgaria.
