The pharmacist‘s role in diabetes care

Abstract. The purpose of this literature review is to analyze the costs that arise as a result of complications of diabetes mellitus and to present the role of the pharmacist in the treatment of patients who suffer from the disease. The implementation of pharmaceutical care achieves: improvement of diagnosis, improvement in adherence to therapy and identification and resolution of drug-related problems. With all these activities, pharmacists provide a longer life of higher quality, a reduced risk of hospitalization due to complications of the disease, respectively a reduced value of health care that is needed by the individual. Patients receive support and assistance on lifestyle change, creating healthy habits and monitoring treatment.
