Abstract. Until the end of 1990s, the colorectal cancer was the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in both men and women younger than 50 years, and now is the first in men and second in women; the incidence remains stable in people under the age 55 and declined in those of 55 and older. Worthy of note is the increase in the diagnosis of colorectal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), often described as indolent lesions incidentally detected in the appendix or like rectal polyps. These neoplasms are classified as NETs, NE carcinomas (NECs), besides the mixed tumors; and there are few reports of large bowel obstruction by primary NETs of the colon or sigmoid. This case study presents a 19-year-old woman who underwent a successful left colectomy to treat the acute obstructive abdomen caused by a voluminous NET that was sited in left colon.

Key words: colorectal neuroendocrine tumors; diagnosis; intestinal obstruction; resection
