Abstract. Introduction: Nurses in hemodialysis centers work in the conditions of continuous intensive provision of quality health care. They face complex and demanding working conditions. Aggravating factors are the increasing number of patients due to prolonged survival and the growing shortage of nurses. Objective: To study the prevalence of burnout syndrome among nurses working in hemodialysis units. Materials and Methods: A study was conducted of 43 nurses working in 7 dialysis centers in the cities of Pleven, Lovech, Cherven bryag, Silistra, Sevlievo, Vidin and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, regarding the prevalence of occupational burnout syndrome. The sociological method used was a direct individual survey with 18 closed and 2 open questions. The following statistical methods were used: analysis of variance of qualitative variables and graphical analysis. The statistical processing of the data was done with the SPSS v.26 program. Results: 39.5% of respondents reported having signs of burnout, 51.2% believed they did not have any, and 9.3% expressed hesitation because they were not well acquainted with the signs of this condition. Among those who reported having burnout, it most often manifested itself in easy fatigue and irritability (72.7%) and loss of motivation and interest in work (31.8%). Conclusion: Quality healthcare is a necessary condition to reduce complications in patients, as well as a prerequisite for the occurrence of burnout syndrome in medical personnel.
