Abstract: Background. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic kidney disease have been a growing medical problem in recent decades, which is associated with their increased incidence, the consumption of significant financial resources from the health system for the treatment of these patients, and the high risk of death in them. The aim of our study is to objectively and critically present existing data in the world literature on the relationship between these two diseases. Materials and methods. We reviewed the existing literature in the medical databases Pub-Med and ScianceDirect, and we became acquainted with more than three hundred publications on the problem, most of them from the last decade. Conclusion. Following consistently and impartially the common pathogenetic mechanisms described in the literature in the emergence and development of the two diseases, we did not establish a certain connection between them. In our opinion, the described common mechanisms do not make them close relatives, but only neighbors.

Key words: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, comorbidities
