Abstract. Modern medical science is witnessing significant progress, but the increasing costs of diagnosis and treatment, especially for socially significant diseases such as low back pain, pose a serious challenge to healthcare systems. One of the most essential roles in the overall process of assessment and coordination between the patient and neurologists, neurosurgeons, and physical medicine physicians is the general practitioner. The aim of this study is to analyze the information on the diagnosis and treatment of lower back pain and the responsibility of the general practitioner in the overall diagnostic and treatment process and its connection to public health. Through an analysis of existing data and current trends in treatment, the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach and the integration of new technologies to improve diagnosis and therapy is highlighted. The present work emphasizes the potential of early diagnosis, intervention, and personalized treatment plans to reduce chronic pain and its associated socioeconomic consequences. Examining different models of healthcare and their economic efficiency can serve as a basis for future research and practical guidelines for addressing this widespread condition, as well as the role of the general practitioner in the overall treatment process.
Key words: low back pain, general practitioner, economic evaluations, cost-effectiveness
