Relationship between prediabetes and periodontitis

Abstract. Epidemiological studies have shown more often relationship between prediabetes and the prevalence or severity of periodontitis. These two conditions are widespread in the world, but in many cases remain hidden from the patient. The need for early diagnosis determines researches for detection a threshold of glycemic indicator, which is risky for development of periodontitis, as well as studies for detection of oral fi ndings, which may allow the identifi cation of individuals with increased glycemic indicators. Studies on the mechanisms of interaction between periodontitis and the systemic conditions prediabetes, hyperglycemia, and diabetes continue. Broadening knowledge of the impact between them will contribute to the early diagnosis and prevention of prediabetes and periodontitis.
