Abstract. The increase in the relative proportion of Cesarean sections (CSs) as a method of delivery has been a steady trend over the last twenty years and it is the most common surgical procedure among women of childbearing age in world. The more developed a country is, the more numerous operative births are. Elective delivery is also called a planned Cesarean section. It is characterized by the fact that it is done at a specific time with a patient and medical team fully prepared for the surgery. Unfortunately, this type of surgery is becoming more common, without any medical indications for it. According to a number of scientists, this is due to fear of childbirth, intention to save the team time, the possibility to choose time so that it is convenient for staff, expensiveness and profitability of the manipulation. Unfortunately, the consequences of the operation are not discussed. For 2021 the share of births with CSs in Bulgaria is 49.94% of all births compared to 47.16% in 2020. This review article considers the section as a method of delivery and aims to summarize the reasons for the increasing rate of CSs.
