Abstract. The blood bank is one of the essential units in the structure of each hospital, especially in emergency situations, disasters and accidents. Increasingly high quality requirements in medicine determine the need to introduce a computerized information system in transfusion structures, as well as their continuous improvement. Nowadays, blood transfusion is an epitome of personalized medicine. Over 100 million blood transfusions are performed worldwide each year, and despite the risks, blood transfusions are life-saving. Studies indicate that the greatest risk to the patient in transfusion is related with a human error. The fully automated laboratory system for performing tests, together with the laboratory information system, as part of the hospital information system, increases the security and safety in providing the patient with blood and blood components, as well as leads to an increase in laboratory safety and reduction of risks to the staff coming in contact with potentially infected material.
