Abstract. The entire process of education in the conditions of the higher medical school is aimed at
building the professional competencies of the future medical specialists, so that they successfully fulfi ll their main role: satisfying the patient’s health care needs. Critical care is characterized by a high workload and responsibility on the part of health care professionals, which requires very good preliminary training before students have the opportunity to engage in practical training in clinical settings. The aim of the present study is to determine the opinion of the students from the “health care” fi eld regarding the practical training in intensive care and the need to introduce new pedagogical methods and tools. Materials and Methods. Two surveys were conducted on 250 students from the “nurse”, “midwife” and “medical assistant” specialties, who study at the Faculty of Public Health “Prof. Dr. Ts. Vodenicharov, MS” of MU – Sofia. Surveys were conducted before and after practical training in intensive care, in which models, simulators, case studies and situational tasks from the practice of intensive care are used. Surveys and training were conducted during the 2022/2023 academic year. Results and Conclusions. The practical training of a student in intensive care requires the development of skills on the basis of theoretical statements and in compliance with a clear and precise algorithm for behavior in life-threatening situations. Students of the “nurse”, “midwife” and “medical assistant” specialties receive suffi cient theoretical knowledge in the fi eld of intensive care, but it is necessary to use and apply modern pedagogical tools and methods in their practical training and the development of practical skills.
