Abstract. Zinc (Zn) is a trace element that plays an important role in a number of physiological processes in the body. The availability of sufficient zinc is necessary for the normal function of the immune system and the reproductive system, as well as for wound healing and other processes. In dermatology, zinc is used in the treatment of conditions caused by zinc deficiency, as well as as an adjunct to the main therapy in a number of inflammatory and infectious dermatoses, alopecias, etc. In the article, we present an overview of some of the indications for the use of zinc in diseases of the skin and mucous membranes. We pay attention to the correct technique for taking and storing blood samples for the study of zinc, point out percentage and quantitative content of zinc in some of the most common products currently on the market. We show the known interactions of zinc with some of the most commonly used medications and pay special attention to the fact that long-term intake of zinc can have undesirable consequences and we recommend taking therapeutic breaks in case of prolonged intake.
