Abstract. The role of infectious agents in gastrointestinal diseases is becoming greater, because normally the human intestines have many bacteria with an increased concentration in the lower parts of the gastrointestinal tract. The most common among the colonizing microorganisms are the so-called problematic gram-negative bacteria. In recent years, the role of one microbe in the progression of gastrointestinal diseases – Klebsiella pneumoniae – has been increasing. This bacterium is often isolated from patients with autoimmune and oncological problems such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and colorectal carcinoma. The aim of the present review is to show the role of Klebsiella pneumoniae as a potential pathogen in intestinal carriage.
Key words: Klebsiella pneumoniae, faeces, digestive tract
