Abstract. Morphologically, gastric carcinoma is a heterogeneous neoplasm consisting of dis-tinct histological types. There are multiple classification systems that distinguish different morphologic and molecular types of gastric carcinoma. The progress of modern technologies enables a details study of this disease at the molecular level. There are two main molecular classifications of gastric carcinoma: the Asian Cancer Research Group (ACRG) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Both represent large-scale, multi-institutional studies characterizing molecular genetic alterations in gastric carcinoma, leading to a better understanding of the biology of the disease and thus, development of new therapeutic options.

Key words: molecular classification, gastric carcinoma, TCGA
