Abstract. Ischemic stroke is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The predictions of the Report of the burden of stroke in Europe (2017) show that in-between the years 2015 and 2035, the total number of ischemic stroke accidents in the European Union will increase by 34%. Aim: To specify the responsibilities of nurses in the planning of nursing care for ischemic stroke patients in the intensive care period. In the following study, the document analysis method has been used for gathering and organizing the information about the structure and setup of health care in intensive hospital conditions regarding patients with acute ischemic stroke. It was determined that the quality of nursing interventions includes different approaches and instrumentation, the main element of which being standardized indicators such as the qualification and skills of nurses, technical cards, standardized protocols and individualized plans for nursing care. Conclusion: The development of the functions of nurses needs to be accepted as a part of a wider tendency to increase effectivity in administering health services/care in patients with ischemic stroke.
